Projects

Khumbu Project

The Khumbu Valley is the gateway to Mount Everest with a population of approximately 10,000 people, including 2,000 children. A team of SmileHigh dental professionals currently examines and treats approximately 500 children per annum and has done so since 2004.

The SmileHigh team visited the five schools in the Khumbu region in December 2008 and followed up with children who were examined and treated earlier in the year (March 2008).  The team noted that the majority of immediate restorations which were placed in March 2008 were still intact and there were a reduced number of new cases of dental caries.

SmileHigh is satisfied that there has been a marked reduction in cases of dental caries since 2004 when the project began. The Khumjung school population now requires ongoing maintenance treatment, however, within the populations at Lukla and Monjo schools also in the Khumbu Valley area, there is still a high incidence of dental caries.   These two schools require the attention of the SmileHigh dental professionals during 2009 and another trip to the region is planned for approximately two weeks in July 2009.  This trip will focus on Lukla and Monjo schools where the incidence of dental decay is high and the SmileHigh team will also follow up with every child from the three other schools in the area as well (Khumjung, Thamo and Thame schools).

Langtang Project

Langtang is a region in Nepal to the north of Kathmandu, bordering Tibet and has a population of approximately 4,100 people, including 800 children.

Dr Julian Haszard and Dr Mingma Sherpa visited the Langtang region in April 2008 with the purpose of assessing the oral health conditions of children in the region.  This enabled them to ascertain the dental resources required to service this region.  Following this visit, SmileHigh has provided funding for a Nepali dental therapist to be trained in Kathmandu and currently a second dental therapist is in training.  Once qualified, the therapists will work to deliver SmileHigh services in this region under the supervision of Dr Mingma Sherpa.

Since April 2008 the SmileHigh team has visited two schools in the Langtang region and treated more than 400 children.  The SmileHigh team also provided education and advice on correct oral hygiene techniques and free toothbrushes and fluoridated toothpaste was given to each child.

Manaslu Project

In August 2009, the SmileHigh team visited the remote Samagon region of Nepal alongside a medical and food-aid mission run by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).  Prior to our visit, the region had not recieved any professional oral health aid.  The Nepal based SmileHigh team was joined by Dr Julian Haszard and overseas volunteer clinicians. The ten day oral health camp, provided basic oral health care, education, toothbrushes and fluoride toothpaste to over 1000 village people.

SmileHigh is was very fortunate to be working with the United Nations World Food Programme for this operation as they provided us critical access into the remote Samagon region. Russell Brice through Himalayan Experience provided the remainder of the logistical support for this operation. Where the support is avialable SmileHigh aims to make this an annual trip.
